Poseidon - Greek God of the Sea

$18500 AUD

POSEIDON was the Olympian god of the sea, earthquakes, floods, drought and horses.

He was depicted as a mature man with a sturdy build and dark beard holding a trident

Poseidon's sacred animals were the bull, the horse and the dolphin. As god of the sea he was also closely associated with fish and other marine creatures.

His chariot was drawn by a pair of fish-tailed horses.

The most famous of his sacred animals in myth was the Cretan Bull, sire of the Minotaur.

Poseidon's sacred plants were the pine tree and wild celery which were used to crown victors at the god's Isthmian Games.

Zeus shared the universe with Poseidon and Hades after Zeus overthrew Cronus, their father. Poseidon gained and ruled the sea as the God of the sea and earthquakes with a sharp trident as his weapon.

Although he had a reputation for having a violent temper, he created many animals including the first horse to impress Demeter. Poseidon was the second most powerful God after Zeus, and he was widely worshipped by seaman.
